India has approved 100 Smart City projects and a new urban renewal mission. This would accelerate economic growth.
It has been estimated that the projects will contribute more than 60 % to the GDP, while the spending on cities would be only 0.7 %.
According to government speakers, the mission of building 100 smart cities intends to promote adoption of smart solutions for efficient use of available assets, resources and infrastructure with the objective of enhancing the quality of urban life and providing a clean and sustainable environment.
Under the smart cities initiative, the focus will be on core infrastructure services like adequate and clean water supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transportation, affordable housing, power supply and robust IT connectivity.
