Google joins the smart city movement

Google has created Sidewalk Labs, a startup that will contribute to improve city life for residents, businesses, and governments.

The new company will use technology to help governments run their urban areas more efficiently.

Sidewalk Labs will work on products, platforms and partnerships to meet the challenges faced by cities, such as making transportation more efficient, lowering the cost of living and reducing energy usage.

The growth of smart cities will be powered by better connectivity and the spread of the Internet of Things. It has been predicted that by 2020, there will be 9.7 billion connected objects reporting into smart cities systems.
