CITyFiED is a 5-year European project which aims to adapt European cities and urban ecosystems into the smart city of the future. The mission is to reduce the energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions and to increase the use of renewable energy sources.
The consortium comprises 18 partners from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Turkey, including industry and public authorities. It is financed by the EU and led by the CARTIF foundation.
The project strategy includes five major aspects:
1.- Large scale demonstrations at three holistic district renovations: Laguna de Duero-Valladolid (Spain), Soma (Turkey) and Lund (Sweden)
2.- Maximization of the replication potential through the organization of a cluster of cities and building a community of interest among them
3.-Development of new and cost-effective methodologies for planning, deploying and replicating energy efficient actions
4.- Optimization of business models to support the strategy for transforming urban areas into Nearly Zero-Energy Districts (NZED)
5.- A clear message to professionals, academics and also to the public who need to be on-board with energy efficiency measures including mobility
The project will promote the development and implementation of new technologies for building renovation, smart grids and district heating. It should lead to 100 potential projects in other cities.
