As part of a joint project carried out by the City Council and the University of Bristol, rediffusion infrastructure of the city is being upgraded. The project will require an investment of £ 75 million.
For a fee, telecommunications equipment companies and mobile app start-ups will be able to test new products and services. Research areas include future mobile networks, new applications for traffic flow, pollution control and the potential of driverless vehicles, monitoring of smart energy networks as well as remote healthcare.
The initiative is being promoted by local authorities, who are committed to make the city a “laboratory for change”. The project places Bristol at the forefront of the smart city concept, which is driven by the global trend towards urbanization, the growth of mobile communications and the Internet of things.
